THE MALAGO SOCIETY
FOR BISHOPSWORTH & BEDMINSTER
ABOUT THE MALAGO HISTORY SOCIETY
The MALAGO History Society was named after the stream that flows from the hills of Dundry and through Bedminster.
In 1973 the staff and pupils of Bedminster Down School wrote and produced a musical play on the theme of children looking for the source of the Malago. Produced by Anton Bantock, Head of History at the school, additional research of photographs and reminiscences enabled further episodes to be included in the show.
As it would have been a pity to let this research go to waste, in January 1974 Malago Archives Committee was formed to continue the work.
In January 1975 a local history evening at the school presented some of the information in the form of readings, songs and dances. Anton Bantock was then asked to run a series of talks on local history for adults, from which the present Malago History Society is descended.
THE MALAGO MAGAZINE
The first magazine was introduced in the summer of 1975. Following its success, the Society continued to produce a magazine every year sometimes twice a year for the next forty years. The last copy, number 71, was produced as a tribute to Anton Bantock, who died in March 2015.
He was the acknowledged authority, on the history of the Smyth Family of Ashton Court, founder friend and a pillar of the
Malago History Society.
The Malago magazines are no longer produced. However, each magazine has been scanned and an electronic version of the complete set has been produced on behalf of The Malago History Society in 2016 and is available on a USB stick at any of the meetings or by sending us a message via our ‘contact us’ section.
THE MALAGO HISTORY SOCIETY 2018
Today the Society continues to attract new members who have an interest in local history.
Each year the programme of talks and speakers are chosen for their interesting subjects and presentation, covering a wide range of topics.
The Committee will try to keep members and visitors entertained with talks of interest and will consider subjects which are of general interest to all members,
The programme (and membership) runs from January to November concluding with our customary American supper at the November meeting.
